Glossary of Terms

A/B Testing. A method to compare two versions of an ad or post to determine which performs better.

Ad. The creative content shown to the audience, including visuals, headlines, and descriptions.

Ad Account. A space within Meta where you create and manage ads, including billing information, campaigns, and ad sets.

Ad Fatigue. When an audience sees your ad too often, resulting in declining engagement or effectiveness.

Algorithm. A set of rules used by social media platforms to determine which content is shown to users based on engagement and relevance.

Analytics. Tools that provide insights into content performance, including metrics like engagement, reach, and conversions.

Avatar. A visual representation of a user or brand on social media, often as a profile picture.

Bidding. The strategy for competing for ad placements in Meta's ad auction (e.g., CPC or CPM).

Bio. A short description on a social media profile that provides information about the individual or brand.

Boosted Post. A Facebook or Instagram post that has been paid for to reach a larger audience.

Budget. The amount of money allocated to a campaign or ad set, set as daily or lifetime.

Business Portfolio. A Meta platform that allows businesses to manage multiple ad accounts, Pages, and user roles in one place.

Call-to-Action (CTA). A button or phrase encouraging users to take a specific action (e.g., "Shop Now" or "Learn More").

Campaign. The highest level in the Meta Ads structure, where you set an advertising objective.

Carousel Ads. An ad format that displays multiple images or videos within a single ad.

Clickbait. Content designed to attract attention and encourage clicks, often using sensational or misleading headlines.

CPC (Cost Per Click). The cost of a single click on your ad.

CPM (Cost Per Mille). The cost per 1,000 ad impressions.

Community Management. Engaging with followers, responding to comments, and fostering online interactions.

Content Curation. The act of finding and sharing relevant content from various sources with your audience.

Conversion. A desired action taken by a user, such as making a purchase or filling out a form.

CTR (Click-Through Rate). The percentage of people who click your ad after seeing it.

Custom Audiences. An audience created from your customer data, such as email lists or website visitors.

Direct Message (DM). A private message sent between users on a social media platform.

Dynamic Ads. Ads that automatically show relevant products to users based on their online behavior.

Employee Advocacy. When employees share company content on their personal social media profiles to increase reach.

Engagement. Actions taken on a post, such as likes, comments, shares, clicks.

Engagement Rate. A metric that measures the level of interaction a post receives relative to its reach or followers.

Ephemeral Content. Content that is available for a short time, like Instagram Stories or Snapchat Snaps.

Facebook Ads Insights. A feature that provides data and analytics for ad campaigns, including impressions, clicks, and conversions.

Facebook Page Insights. A tool that provides analytics for Facebook Pages, including metrics on likes, post reach, and audience demographics.

Follower. A user who subscribes to your content on social media platforms.

Frequency. The average number of times each person sees your ad.

Geotagging. Adding a geographical location to social media posts to indicate where they were created.

Handle. A username on social platforms, often preceded by the "@" symbol.

Hashtag. A word or phrase preceded by the "#" symbol, used to categorize content and make it discoverable.

Impressions. The total number of times your content or ad is displayed.

Influencer. A social media user with a significant following who can influence audience opinions or behaviors.

Insights. Analytics provided by platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn to measure content performance.

Landing Page. The webpage users are directed to after clicking an ad.

Lead Generation Ads. Ads designed to collect user information directly within Meta's platforms.

LinkedIn Articles. Long-form content that users or businesses can publish on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn Showcase Pages. Sub-pages under a LinkedIn Business Page used to highlight specific brands or business divisions.

Live Streaming. Broadcasting real-time video content on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

Lookalike Audiences. Audiences that resemble a Custom Audience, helping reach new people likely to be interested in your business.

Mention. Tagging another user in a post by using their handle, notifying them of the reference.

News Feed. The continuously updating list of posts and updates from users, pages, and groups a user follows.

Organic Reach. The number of unique users who see your content without paid promotion.

Paid Reach. The number of users who see your content through paid promotion.

Pinned Post. A post that stays at the top of a page for visibility.

Pixel. A piece of code placed on a website to track user behavior and measure the effectiveness of ads.

Placements. The locations where ads appear, such as Facebook News Feed, Instagram Stories, or LinkedIn Sponsored Content.

Reach. The number of unique users who see your content.

Reactions. Emojis or icons that users click to express their feelings about a post (e.g., Like, Love, Angry).

Retargeting. A form of online advertising targeting users who previously interacted with your website or content.

Social Listening. Monitoring social media platforms for mentions of your brand, competitors, or relevant keywords.

Tag. Identifying another user in a post or photo, creating a link to their profile and notifying them.

Thread. A series of connected posts or comments on a social media platform that follow a single topic or conversation.

User-Generated Content (UGC). Content created by customers or users about a brand or product, often shared on social media.

Viral. Content that spreads rapidly across the internet, achieving high levels of engagement and reach.
